Wonderful surprise at the farm Wonderful surprise at the farm

I was thrilled to find this mass of lotus flowers in the pool at Ban Rai Arun on my return from Sweden. There had been nothing but a few unpromising leaves, flat on the surface of the water, when I left.
Such great beauty Such great beauty

The island garden in good shape The island garden in good shape

Though there had been some severe storms in my absence, and some trees and minor structures were damaged, this part of the estate was looking pretty good.

Another pleasant surprise Another pleasant surprise

It's a year or more since I wrote and submitted my communications chapter for this hefty and expensive book. This author's copy was waiting for me when I got back - and that's the only material benefit from the exercise.

Mr Yut helps out Mr Yut helps out

Every couple of months Mr Yut comes from his exile in Ban Rai Arun to tidy up my garden in town. Here, we are helping out the village by doing a bit of grass cutting in front of my house, a job which had been unusually neglected for too long.

After months of joint discussion and mental to-ing and fro-ing, I decided to buy Ui a motorbike for his sixteenth birthday. A condition was his passing the driving test and getting a licence, which he had done the previous week (at the same time as his mother failed!) There are some strict rules - wearing a crash helmet and being home by 8pm, amongst others - failure to observe which may lead to the bike being sold. He'll use it primarily for getting to school and back each day.
